A New Type of Manufacturing
Light manufacturing can mean anything from crafting in the garage to 300 Kansas Street, a 3D printing to a state-of-the-art research and small-batch manufacturing hub in the heart of the Mission District in San Francisco.
Within the shell of this modern saw-tooth-designed structure resides the infrastructure for office space, research and development, and the production of everything from car parts and household items to pharmaceuticals and other forms of advanced chemistry.
The design challenge for such an innovative and unique property was simple, don’t be boring!

Lenticular Design

Working to produce an exterior and interior design language that would peak interest yet tie into the structure, we took inspiration from the architecture itself. On the West and East Sides of the building, the outer skin flexes outward in a sawtooth pattern that gives the building a lenticular quality. That is, when you look at it from one direction, it appears one way, then when you move around the structure, it takes on a different appearance.
One of the advantages of working within the lived environment is the freedom you gain from being able to fabricate in three dimensions and to have the audience viewing the item from many directions. For the exterior entry of the building, this concept manifests in letterforms and shapes that can transform as they are being passed by.

This design concept translates to the interior of the building with some surprisingly interesting results.
